Alumni Achievement – Janki Teli

My name is Janki Teli and I have a master’s degree in Zoology with specialization in Wildlife Biology and Fishery Science. I have been schooled throughout from Nursery to Std 12th at Udgam School of Children and an alumni of Udgam of 1996 batch.

Working in the field of wildlife research and nature education for more than 18 years, I am passionate about interacting with children specially to encourage and motivate critical and logical thinking through understanding our environment and nature.  I have worked in the field of ornithological research and developed many tools that can be helpful to students and amateurs to identify and understand birds better and feel closer to our natural heritage. I have also worked in the field of marine research and carried out research-based project in Gulf of Kachchh – Gujarat on biodiversity of coral reefs, their health and threats.  I have been associated as scientist with institutes like Gujarat Ecological Education and Research Foundation, Bombay Natural History Society (One of the oldest NGO’s of India working in field of ecological research) and Center For Environment Education.  I have been a part of National Children Science Congress and also worked with Vigyan Prasar in designing nature education material and activity kits for school children. I am also associated with many extra-curricular education institutes as visiting faculty teaching children about our nature and environment with hands on activities.   I have written two books, numerous reports in subject of birds and marine life and have a few scientific papers published in journal of international repute. As team member have worked for scripting and direction of educational documentaries on birds and also provided my technical expertise to develop a software programme for amateurs learn birding and identification of birds.

I will always be grateful and thankful to my first alma matter – Udgam School for Children where my learning journey began. The constant motivation and encouragement from teachers right from nursery, personal attention by our principal and non-partial attitude of all made my life at school one of the best times I have ever had. I made lifelong friends here. A huge part of my personality is attributed to my school where not only academic and co-curricular subjects were taught but our personalities were developed and groomed through imparting important life skill education and values. First education for sure begins at home, but for me most of my learning has happened in school thereafter, where we had a holistic approach for development and grooming for each and every student.
